Beach volleyball is a sport that has been associated with the Outrigger Canoe Club for more than 100 years. Started by George “Dad” Center as an activity to keep OCC members busy during times when there was a lack of surf, the sport has flourished.
There is action on the OCC volleyball courts 365 days a year for casual play. In addition, tournaments are scheduled during the summer and at Christmas. Some tournaments are open to the public and others are members-only. Some of the tournaments that the Club has sponsored are the Club Two-Man Championship, the “Daddy” Haine Four-Man, Two-Man, Four-Man and Six-Man Open Tournaments, Kane-Wahine, Junior Boys, and Women. In addition Outrigger sponsored a Businessman’s League and a Nooner League.
Dozens of members have turned to pro beach volleyball after their college careers were over. In addition, Outrigger has produced several members of the U.S. Olympic team in beach volleyball.
