The Outrigger Canoe Club Athletic Sponsors Committee was founded in April 1965. It was composed of members, formerly sportsmen and prominent in the business community who were dedicated to the preservation of the OCC image as an institution devoted to the development of youth through healthful athletic activities and to the perpetuation of the sports of old and new Hawaii.
Among the purposes of the committee was the raising of funds to defray the expense of the Club’s athletic teams in local, national and international competition.
One of the first projects of the committee was to raise funds to send the OCC’s undefeated Volleyball Team to the Nationals in Omaha in May 1965. However, the fund was not limited to volleyball but was designed to provide a reserve for participation in other worthwhile athletic events for the Club’s younger members and to exploit the wealth of athletic abilities which existed within the Club.
In 1967, the Athletic Sponsors Committee was active in organizing and sponsoring various inter-club functions related to raising special funds for the promotion of athletic activities; sponsoring athletic memberships; sponsoring and assisting all new sports until the sports received board approval and could be provided for in the budget as an official team; organizing and administering an annual awards banquet to give recognition to Club teams and their members; choosing the recipients of, and making the awards to members of the Club who were honored by receiving the ASC’s Winged “O” Awards; actively promoting and engaging in various programs aimed at magnifying and enhancing the Club’s athletic image as well as encouraging the general membership to participate to some extent in its athletic activities either as competitors or boosters; and finally to actively assist and aid the Club Captain and his committee to implement their program whenever needed.
Under the leadership of Bill Brooks in 1967, the ASC created the Winged “O” Award to honor the Club’s top athletes who also contributed their leadership and support of the athletic program.
The Committee sponsored a number of fund-raising projects, including the popular annual Bouillabaisse Party and the Annual Athletic Awards Banquet which began on February 3, 1969.
The Athletic Sponsors Committee became known as the Winged “O” Committee in 1970.
