The Outrigger Canoe Club joined the Hawaii Surfing Association in January, 1967. In its application letter, Club Captain Cline Mann noted, “Our Club was founded in 1908 expressly for the purpose of reviving and perpetuating the sports of surfing and canoeing, which at that time were almost approaching extinction. The original purposes still remain, with the addition of volleyball and sailing actively promoted.”
Mann stated that “The Club has at least 100 surfers in the various membership categories, which begin with junior at age 10. Some surf for recreation only; others are in active competition.”
