Every year the OCC Swimming Committee invites members to log their swimming miles, from either pool or ocean in quarter-mile segments. On the day of the Castle Swim, swimmers who reach certain milestones are honored with plaques to denote their accomplishments.
The ultimate award was to be the Transpac Award for swimming 2,225 miles which is the equivalent of swimming from Honolulu to San Francisco. Nearly a dozen members have been awarded the Transpac Award since it was started in 1975.
That goal has long been exceeded by a number of members, including Bonnie Eyre, who reached the 10,000 mile mark in 2012. That is the distance of a round trip between San Francisco and Honolulu, twice. Bonnie began keeping track of her miles in 1985 and hit 3,000 miles in 1989, 5,000 miles in 1993, 7,000 miles in 2001 and 8,000 miles in 2004. She swims daily for several hours in the ocean in front of the Club and has made friends with a number of the reef fish and turtles that inhabit the area.
