Canoe racing had pretty much died out by the time the Outrigger Canoe Club was founded in 1908. Outrigger played a significant role in reviving the sport which led to the formation of the Hawaiian Canoe Racing and Surfing Association in 1950.
The Kamehameha Aquatic Club (founded in 1906) sponsored a Kamehameha Day Regatta for other native Hawaiian Clubs in Kalihi Bay and participated in Regatta Day races in Honolulu Harbor along with Prince Kuhio’s Kona Club and the Kalihi Aquatic Club. The Hawaiian clubs considered the Kamehameha Day races the Territorial championships. The last one was held in 1916.
Outrigger was the first non-native canoe club founded to preserve Hawaiian water sports and began hosting occasional regattas in Waikiki in conjunction with special events. Outrigger held its first regatta as part of a celebration planned by the Territory for the visit of the Great White Fleet just two months after the Club opened. Periodic water carnivals followed where there were many aquatic events including surfing, surfboard races, canoe sailing, motor boat racing and canoe paddling races.
Two years later OCC founder Alexander Hume Ford invited the Clark Excursionists to make a port stop in Honolulu on their way around the Pacific. To welcome them, an aquatic carnival was held in Waikiki. The Hawaiian clubs from Kalihi paddled over and participated. The canoe races produced Outrigger’s first winning 6-man canoe racing crew: Harry Steiner, William Cottrell, Edmond Melanphy, David Center, Zen Genoves and Rusty Brown.
Cash prizes in considerable amounts were posted for races among the Hawaiian clubs. Outrigger joined the AAU in 1910 and refused cash prizes to maintain their amateur status. The Hawaiian clubs continued to race for cash, while the OCC crews turned their winnings over to the Clubhouse fund which was used to build the wooden pavilion and bathhouse.
The Kalihi clubs slowly faded away in 1916. Only Outrigger and Hui Nalu, which had begun competing in canoe racing in 1911, were still standing.
A further revival of canoe racing began in 1933 to celebrate the formal opening of the Kona section of the new Mamalahoa Highway (Hawaii Belt Road). Canoe racing was planned as one of the activities of the celebration. The Kona Classic as the races became known lasted for three years in Kona before the last one was held in Honolulu Harbor in 1936. These were the first known races since 1917 where the event schedule was only for Hawaiian outrigger canoes. The winners were considered the Territorial champions.
In 1943 the Outrigger began what is now the longest continual outrigger canoe regatta in the world–the Walter J. Macfarlane Memorial Regatta on the 4th of July every year at Waikiki Beach. The Macfarlane was the beginning of modern canoe racing where only Hawaiian outrigger canoes participated. Outrigger also sponsored the Kamehameha Day Canoe Regatta for a number of years.
The Hawaiian Canoe Racing and Surfing Association was formed in 1950 at the behest of Outrigger to standardize the rules for canoe racing. Outrigger’s Bob Fischer spearheaded the move and the other founding members (Hui Nalu, Waikiki Surf Club and Ko’olaupoko Lions Club) were soon aboard. The first president was Outrigger’s Samuel Fuller.
Canoe racing quickly became a popular water sports activity in Hawaii. With the advent of the fiberglass canoe the sport grew and new clubs formed in Hawaii and around the world. Canoe racing became the official Hawaii State Sport.
Early races were held in Honolulu Harbor, Kalihi Bay and after Outrigger was formed, in Waikiki. When the Ala Wai Canal was built in 1928, a few races were held there. When Ala Moana Channel was opened in 1933, it became a venue for canoe racing. In 1949 the first race at Kailua Beach was held.
We have listed all the early canoe races we could find. If we missed some, please let us know.
In the earliest races, winners were identified by the canoe name (shown in italics) and the steersman. The Hawaiian clubs had their own canoes, but the Outrigger and Hui Nalu didn’t own racing canoes in the early days and borrowed them from people who owned them. The club’s were often in one canoe in one regatta, while the other club used that canoe in the next regatta. Eventually Outrigger and Hui Nalu acquired their own racing canoes.
