The Outrigger Canoe Club has been a member of the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association since it was formed in 1950. Originally named the Hawaiian Canoe Racing and Surfing Association, its main purpose was the encouragement and advancement of canoe racing and surfing in the Territory. OCC was one of the four charter members of the association along with Hui Nalu Canoe Club, Waikiki Surf Club and Ko`olaupoko Canoe Club.
By 1953, the association had grown to include Healani, Honaunau, Hui Kalia and Kai Opua canoe clubs. A year later, Lanikai Association, Kukui O Lanikaula Canoe Club Molokai, Kai Oni Canoe Club and Waiakea Lions Club Canoe Club joined.
HCRA is the umbrella organization for the island canoe racing associations: Kauai Outrigger Association (KOA), Hui Wa’a, Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association, Molokai Canoe Racing Association, Moku O Hawaii Outrigger Canoe Racing Association and the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.
HCRA sponsors the State Championship regatta on the first Saturday of August every year. Clubs earn their spots in the race through points achieved in their association during regatta season.
The Bylaws have evolved over the year as paddling has grown from the initial four clubs into five associations and hundreds of paddlers statewide.
