Athletics at the Outrigger Canoe Club are directed by the Club Captain with the assistance of an Athletic Controller. The OCC Board of Directors appointed the Controller who is the intermediary between Club management and the Club Captain and Athletic Committees. The Athletic Committee is made up of the chairs of the various athletic subcommittees. The Club maintains a robust athletic program of intra-club and inter-club competition, encouraging members to enjoy the ocean and land sports that surround us.
From 1908 until 2016, the Athletic Program was under the direct supervision of a Club Captain, who was either elected to the position (until 1932) or appointed by the Board of Directors. The Club Captain is a volunteer position held by a Club member.
The Club added a professional Athletic Controller in November 2016 due to the Club’s expanded program. The Athletic Controller is a salaried staff position under the supervision of the General Manager. The Club Captain and members of the Athletic Committee continue to be volunteers from the Club membership.
Outrigger’s longest serving Club Captain is the legendary George “Dad” Center who served from 1914-1929, and finally from 1933-1942 shaping the OCC amateur athletic program into one of the world’s more competitive.
Each year the Athletic Committee reports on the success of the athletic program at the OCC Annual Meeting. Copies of those reports follow.
