Barbara Del Piano was voted to Life Membership in the Outrigger Canoe Club at the Annual Meeting on February 23, 2009. Barbara joined the Club in 1947.
Barbara is a gifted writer and wrote more than 75 historical articles for The Outrigger magazine, as well as the Centennial book, The Outrigger Canoe Club — The First 100 Years. The Board of Directors gave her an Outstanding Service Award for a year-long series of articles she wrote covering each decade of the Club’s history for the Millennium, and a Timeline of the OCC which also appeared in the magazine.
Barbara has served on various committees as both chair and member, and was one of the organizers of the Old Timers’ Get Together, an annual gathering of friends from the Old Club in Waikiki.
In 2008 for the Centennial of the Club, she created a diorama of the Club built after the fire of 1914 and the 1940 Clubhouse. After its original display, Barbara went back and decorated the Clubhouse model for the holidays in another beautiful Christmas display. The dioramas were works of incredible charm and genius.
Beginning in 1993 Barbara began conducting Oral Histories with long-time members for the Historical Committee. She completed 28 oral histories which may be found in the Archives on this website.
Barbara passed away on June 12, 2021.
