Charles E. “Bud” Ackerman Jr.

Oral History

Bud Ackerman was voted to Life Membership in the Outrigger Canoe Club at the Annual Meeting on February 26, 2007.  He joined the Club on January 1, 1936 and served the Club in many capacities as a committee member, committee chair, director and officer.

During his tenure as President of the Club Bud was instrumental in many improvements including new lockers in the dressing rooms, new railings for stairs between the Colony Surf and Club, new stairs over the sea groin (Elks side, since removed), construction of a multi-purpose fitness center and renovations to the Manager’s and Business Offices.

Bud was also credited with establishing the Outrigger Living Fund, which later became the Outrigger Foundation and then the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.  The purpose of all of the organizations was to raise funds to support young athletes as they trained and pursued greater competition on the Mainland and in Hawaii.
