Duke Kahanamoku was elected to Life Membership in the Outrigger Canoe Club after his double Gold medal performance in swimming at the 1920 Olympic Games. He had previously won Gold and Silver medals in the 1912 Olympics prior to becoming a member of the OCC in 1917. In 1924 he added a Silver medal and in 1932 a Bronze medal.
Duke became the Club’s ambassador of Aloha as he shared his love of surfing around the world. He was elected to the OCC Board of Directors a record number of times, serving seven consecutive two-year terms before being named a Life member of the Board in 1953. He remained an active member of the Board until his death in 1968. Duke was also an avid volleyball player and steered and coached many of the Club’s canoe racing teams in the 1940s.
When the Board changed the manner of awarding Life/Honorary memberships in 1964, Duke’s membership was changed to Life member.
