Robert A. Anderson Jr. was voted to Life Membership in the Outrigger Canoe Club at the Annual Meeting on February 28, 2005. Bob was given a membership in the Club at age 12 by his uncle George “Dad” Center. He grew up at the Club surfing and paddling, days he fondly remembers.
After returning from Air Corps service in December 1945, Bob still remembers the warm greeting he received at the Club and calls it one of his happiest memories of his years of Outrigger membership.
Bob served on a number of committees during his long membership, including a term as President in 1977. One of his proudest accomplishments was redesigning, with Cline Mann and Toots Minvielle’s concurrence, was the course for the Walter J. Macfarlane Memorial Regatta when he was Club Captain in the 1950s. The race used to finish parallel to the beach so the judges in the bar could see the finish. His idea was to make the course perpendicular to the beach as it is today.
As chair of the Disciplinary Committee, he says he and Neal Ifversen saved several young boys from expulsion after their destructive shenanigans damaged the Boy’s Locker Room. Bob believes that one of the greatest benefits of Club membership for young people is the grounding in morals and good conduct that they receive from coaches, members and other OCC role models.
