After losing its lease, Outrigger Canoe Club officially closed down its original home in Waikiki (since 1908) with a nostalgic New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 1963 after which all operations ceased. All operations moved to the new Club, a mile down Waikiki Beach at the foot of Diamond Head on January 1, 1964. A final ceremony on January 8, 1964 was held on the beach to bid a fond aloha to the old Club. At the conclusion of the ceremony members paddled the Club’s canoes to the new Club as part of the blessing of the new Clubhouse. Participating in the ceremony were OCC President Ward Russell, the Rev. Abraham Akaka, and Duke Kahanamoku.
