In 1976, Fred and Randy founded International Professional Surfing (IPS), the original governing body of professional surfing, launching the first world championship tour and establishing an international ranking system. Patti joined them in 1977, overseeing the women’s division and advocating for gender equality in the sport. Together, they played a pivotal role in shaping modern competitive surfing, bringing the sport to a global audience.
Jodi’s career in surf has spanned 30 years, most notably in her roles as director of the Pipe Masters, Eddie Aikau Invitational and Van’s Triple Crown Contests. Fred, a champion surfer, went on to serve in Hawaii’s legislature, while Randy, a master surfboard shaper, led IPS for 38 years. Patti, a trailblazing female surfer, continues to advocate for women’s sports as a law professor and commissioner. The program is a fascinating glimpse into the history of professional surfing, highlighting the legacy of these influential figures who helped shape the sport we know today.
