This trophy was commissioned by the Outrigger Canoe Club Canoe Racing Committee as a perpetual trophy for the Skippy Kamakawiwo`ole Long Distance Canoe Race which the Club sponsored at the time. Before the trophy could be awarded the Club dropped its sponsorship of the race.

In 2017, the Canoe Racing Committee decided to activate the trophy for its original purpose.

The trophy is a genuine Hawaiian drum in the true Hawaiian spirit. It was crafted by a Hawaiian drum maker in Kalihi. The drum maker was very excited to be making a true Hawaiian drum, and not a tourist type drum, according to Kawika Grant of the CRC. Six paddles form the base of the drum where the sound comes out. It was crafted from a coconut stump. It has a shark skin stretched across the top of the drum.

The drum maker’s wife wrote a chant that was to be performed when the drum was blessed. The Club  has yet to bless the drum and give it “its voice”.

Funding for the drum came from Mrs. Muriel Flanders and she asked that the trophy be named for her mother, Alice Kamokila Campbell.

The drum is displayed in the Lobby Display Case.
