The Council of the City and County of Honolulu congratulates
The Outrigger Canoe Club’s Team for their record-breaking victory in the Na Wahine O Ke Kai, the annual Moloka`i to O`ahu Canoe Race Race 1984
“The ancient Hawaiians used outrigger canoes as their first mode of travel between the Hawaiian Islands. This early tradition has been carried on the annual Na Wahine O Ke Kai annual Moloka`i to O`ahu canoe race. Hawaii should be proud to host this yearly event which is the most prestigious outrigger canoe paddling championship in the world.
Our state’s pride extends even further this year, however. For the third time since its beginning in 1979, the Outrigger Canoe Club’s women’s team won the Na Wahine O Ke Kai, the annual Moloka`i to O`ahu canoe race. What is even more special about this year’s victory for the women, however, is the record breaking time that they set for crossing the Kaiwi Channel. The superiority of the Outrigger Canoe Club’s women’s team is clearly established.
This year the Outrigger Canoe Club’s Women’s team competed against approximately nineteen other teams, including teams from California and Tahiti. The stiff competition pushed the team to cross the Kaiwi Channel in a record breaking time.
The dedication and commitment of the Club’s members, Lesline Conner, Tiare Finney, Mary Mason, Jeanne Jenkins, Mary Franco, Kaiulu Downing, Sandra Stanley, Kisi Haine, Muffer Scully, Pat Shaughnessy, Katy Bourne, and Tracy Phillips, and Tom Conner, Coach, are to be commended. They worked hard together as a team to once again keep the championship title in Hawaii.
On behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, the Council is proud to congratulate the Outrigger Canoe Club Women’s team for its record-breaking victory in this year’s Na Wahine O Ke Kai. We extend our warmest mahalo and aloha for their hard work and dedication.”
