The Council of the City and County of Honolulu congratulates
The Outrigger Canoe Club Senior Men’s Team for their record-breaking victory in the Moloka`i Ho`e, the Annual Moloka`i to O`ahu Canoe Race 1984
“The ancient Hawaiians used outrigger canoes as their first mode of travel between the Hawaiian Islands. This early tradition has been carried on the annual Moloka`i Ho`e, the senior men’s annual Moloka`i to O`ahu canoe race. Hawaii should be proud to host this yearly event which is the most prestigious outrigger canoe paddling championship in the world.
Our state should be even prouder, however, of the Outrigger Canoe Club for winning the championship for the second year in a row. The Outrigger Canoe Club competed against approximately ten other teams, including teams from Illinois, Canada, West Germany, Australia and Tahiti. The stiff competition pushed the team to cross the Kaiwi Channel in a record breaking time.
The dedication and commitment of the Club’s members, Henry Ayau, Marc Haine, Mike Fox, Keone Downing, Kevin Olds, Bill Bright, Ed Pickering, Brant Ackerman, Bob Riley, and Steve Scott, Coach, who are to be commended. Their many long hours of hard work have been rewarded in this year’s record time.
On behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, the Council is proud to congratulate the Outrigger Canoe Club for its record-breaking victory in this year’s Moloka`i Ho`e. They represent the true spirit of Ho`e Wa`a and teamwork.”
