“Dad” Center was the Outrigger Canoe Club’s first coach (of all sports), long-time Club Captain, coach of the 1920 Olympic swimming team, and supporter of all OCC sports. He is primarily known as a swimming coach and outrigger canoe paddler. In addition, He rowed, ran track, and played volleyball, basketball and baseball. He invented beach volleyball in 1915. He coached youngsters of all ages in ocean sports, and was one of the Club’s most beloved members.
His photo and paddle hang prominently behind the bar in the Ka Moi Lounge and Boathouse.
