When Outrigger sponsored its first race (Diamond Head Buoy Paddleboard Race) in 1974 it was the only prone paddleboard race held on Oahu. In 1978 the Club dropped the DH race and started the Waikiki Winter Ocean 10K race, and added Waikiki Summer 10K in 1979. In 1979 Hui O He’e Nalu started its Independence Day Race on the north shore and OCC added its Summer Surf Race in 1981. These were the only four races until 1987. In the ’90s a number of new races started (and stopped after several years) and Outrigger members were eager and ready for the competition.
Over time Outrigger’s races have morphed into the Cline Mann Ko’olaupoko Race (a distance race from Makai Pier in Waimanalo to the OCC Beach) and Scratchfest (a surf race). The Da Hui Independence Day Race continues, as does the Molokai 2 Oahu World Championships started in 1997. In addition, the Catalina-Manhattan Beach Classic was revived in 1982 and members still take on that challenge.
Opportunities to participate in the Old Hawaiian sport of prone paddling still call and Outrigger’s young and old continue to make their mark.
We have compiled the results of Club members in many of the paddleboard races in the islands. Results for some years of races were not found, and complete results of some races were also unavailable. This list may have omissions so we invite members who do not see their results to contact the Historical Committee so the site can be updated. If we missed a race, let us know.
