Elected to Winged “O”: 1980
Born on July 14, 1936 and raised in Hawaii from a pioneer family that came to Lahaina, Maui in 1849, Kimo joined the Outrigger Canoe Club in 1946. With a lapse in membership after graduating from Punahou School in 1955, he reinstated his membership in 1969 to take advantage of the superior athletic program and to renew the camaraderie of friends he had missed during his years away from the Club.
Kimo donated his time on numerous athletic committees and served as Director or Coordinating Director for most major committees not to mention his involvement or participation in activities at every level of life at the Club.
In particular his years of escorting of the Club’s crews across the Molokai Channel are among his favorite memories.
All sports are of interest to Kimo but his real love has been the ocean and its related sports. His early exposure to boats and the sea enabled him to dive and fish commercially, or for fun, throughout all the major islands in the state and as far away as Johnston Island. This experience gave him a great deal of expertise in island waters.
During his younger years as an age group swimmer he spent most of his time at competitive school meets. He eventually earned honors as Territorial champion in high school and won further national acclaim in his college years.
As a member of the Club he won numerous awards in canoe paddling, surfing, paddle board racing, ocean swimming and marathon running.
In 1968 Kimo won the World Champion of Champions event in skeet shooting and missed making the Olympic Skeet Squad by one person in the 1963 Rochester, New York tryouts. He has been elected All-American seven times and held several world skeet shooting records.
Kimo served on the Canoe Racing Committee in 1969, 1973-1974, 1978 and 1980. He was on the Swimming Committee in 1969, the Surfing Committee in 1976 and the Running Committee in 1978. He has served on the Winged “O” Committee in 1980, 1984, 1987-1988 and 1990.
Kimo was elected to the Outrigger Canoe Club Board of Directors in 1982 where he served as Coordinating Director of Athletics and the Winged “O”, was Coordinating Director of Admissions and Membership in 1983, Assistant Secretary in 1984, and Coordinating Director of the Entertainment and Historical Committees in 1985. and Assistant Treasurer and Coordinating Director of the Historical Committee in 1986.
More recently he served on the Admissions and Membership Committee in 2004.
