Outrigger Canoe Club fielded soccer teams from 1921-1924. The Surfers, as they were known, won the Honolulu Soccer League Association Championship in 1921, 1922 and 1924, and were second in 1923.
The Club compiled an enviable record of 26 wins, three losses and three ties in the four years its teams competed.
The teams played with two 20-minute halves, with a 10 minute break between. Each team consisted of 11 players, five forwards, three halfbacks, two fullbacks and a goalie. Substitution was not allowed until 1923.
Jack Rosemond served as captain of the Club’s soccer teams, and a core group played the entire four years.
The Outrigger stopped playing soccer after the 1924 season as it could not recruit enough players to continue.
Outrigger did not keep records on its soccer teams, so the information has been recreated from newspaper articles. First names of many of the athletes were not reported by the papers. The news stories may be found at the end of each year’s results.
