Surfboard water polo has been played at the Outrigger Canoe Club since the 1930s. First popular with the Club’s beachboys, it quickly gained popularity with members. The sport thrilled tourists at Waikiki Beach when played at the old Club. At the Club’s present site at Diamond Head, moored canoes and catamarans are moved to provide a playing area, complete with floating goal posts.
Although the Club has hosted open tournaments, the sport is mainly played on Club Day when intra-club competition is held in a number of sports.
The OCC formed a water polo team in the 1920s and played other teams. One of the Club’s oldest trophies is the Gay Harris Water Polo Trophy which the Club won in 1925 and 1928.
In the 1980s, when John Nielsen chaired the Water Polo Committee, an OCC team was formed that played in local water polo leagues.
Outrigger is proud to be the home of Chris Duplanty, a three-time U.S. Olympic water polo goalie.
