Past President Lorrin P. Thurston was elected to Life Membership at the Annual Meeting on February 28, 1983. Thurston was a long-time member who served on Club committees from 1926 until 1984. He was instrumental in restarting the sport of canoe racing in 1933 with the regatta in Napo’opo’o Bay in Kona. He is also the person who named the koa racing canoe Kakina.
