The President of the Outrigger Canoe Club appointed a Canoe Committee to watch over canoes on July 16, 1942. This was prompted by the number of canoes currently sitting on the beach at the OCC and being stored in the Club’s canoe shed. Some members were also using their private canoes to take paying passengers out for rides in competition with the Club’s Waikiki Beach Patrol. Duke Kahanamoku was appointed to chair the committee.
The Canoe Committee made a number of recommendations to the Board, among which were the following: That the Club retain for the use of what was formerly known as the Waikiki Beach Patrol, three canoes, Eleu, Ehukai and Ka Moi; and that all other Club canoes be dismantled and stored under the pavilion or building on the beach. All members’ private canoes be moved entirely away from under the pavilion to the vacant area adjoining the Club grounds. The Club Manager would have full control of all Club canoes, and the Canoe Committee with canoe owners have control only of the canoes transferred to the vacant area. The Club would no longer maintain privately owned canoes. No canoe owner could rent or in any way bring to himself financial remuneration for the use of his canoe. That all canoe owners be charged a nominal rent for keeping their canoes on property controlled by the Club. And finally, any member wishing to use one of the Club canoes be charged one-half the usual rent.
