Mark Buck was voted to Life Membership in the Outrigger Canoe Club at the Annual Meeting on February 10, 2020. Mark joined the Outrigger in 1957 at the age of 12 and has been an active participant in the athletic program and has served on numerous committees, including President of the Club in 1988.
Mark grew up at the Outrigger and like many young athletes he was involved in all sports. If he wasn’t playing volleyball, he was in a canoe or on a wave. If he wasn’t playing, he was teaching others to play, paddle, surf or rig a canoe. His athletic accomplishments are enormous and as a result he was in the first group of Club athletes elected to the Winged “O” in 1968 alongside Duke Kahanamoku and six others.
Mark has paddled on more Molokai crews than any other Outrigger member, 25 from 1961-1998, and has his name on the winning trophy five times. In regattas, he has paddled for the Club since 1960 as a Boys 14 when he won his first Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship. He moved up to Boys 15 and was on the undefeated Boys 17 crew in 1962. And then on to the Senior Men’s crew until 1980. He won OHCRA and HCRA titles in 1981 and 1982 on the Men’s Open 4 crews, and then moved up to the Masters Divisions, paddling at the various age levels through Masters 70 in 2019, winning another 22 OHCRA and HCRA titles. Over the course of his 60-year OCC paddling career he won 131 regatta medals, a record that would be hard to beat.
In 1967 Mark was named chair of the Canoe Racing Committee and was Head Canoe Racing Coach for seven years. He also played on Club volleyball teams and was an early advocate of the surfski, entering and winning numerous Kanaka Ikaika races in the masters divisions.
Mark was elected to the Board of Directors for the first time in 1976 and served seven two-year terms on the Board. He was elected President of the Club in 1988.
