Outrigger Canoe Club won its first national men’s open volleyball title at the AAU tournament in Detroit Michigan in 1967, defeating West Side Center, 15-10, for the title. Pete Velasco was named 1st Team All-American and Tom Haine was given an honorable mention. From that tournament, Velasco and Haine were named to the U.S. Pan American Games team, along with their coach John Lowell. Other members of the winning team were Colin Chock, Tony Crabb, Dave Hendrickson, Mike McMahon, Ron Sorrell, Mike Holmes, Cary McGowan and Dodge Parker. The game was filmed in 16 mm by manager Wally Young.
